Diamond house, Mouawad, has crafted a 54.21 carat rough round brilliant-cut fancy vivid yellow diamond, which is considered the largest ever graded to date by the Gemological Institute of America.
The diamond was named the “Mouawad Dragon” as its color is reminiscent of a dragon’s magical powers and fiery eye.
The Mouawad Dragon stone was discovered in the ancient alluvial deposits in South Africa. Historically, that area is known to have produced some of the largest yellow diamonds ever discovered.
Diamonds with color intensity such as that of the Mouawad Dragon have long been prized by collectors and gem enthusiasts.
According to the company, the planning and cutting of the Mouawad Dragon took over six months to complete. The fancy vivid color grading of the Mouawad Dragon makes it the most desirable and rare color on the yellow diamond spectrum and also one of the most revered colored diamonds of all time.
The Mouawad Dragon joins the 51.12 carat D Flawless Dynasty diamond, a recent acquisition by Mouawad. This collection includes exceptional diamonds, such as the 245.35 carat Jubilee Diamond, the 135.92 carat Queen of Holland diamond, the 69.42 carat Taylor Burton, and the largest cushion shaped D IF weighting 218.08 carat.
"We’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to craft this extraordinary diamond from the rough, and we will soon continue the creative process by designing a masterpiece that befits its dazzling beauty," said Fred Mouawad, Co-Guardian of the Diamond Division.
Mouawad has been awarded five Guinness World Records, the most recent of which being for the Mouawad Flower of Eternity Jewellery Coffer—the most valuable jewelry box in the world ($3.5 million).
In 2013, the Mouawad L’Incomparable Diamond Necklace was named the most valuable necklace in the world ($55 million), featuring the world’s largest internally flawless diamond, the Incomparable Diamond (407.48 carat).

During 2003, the Very Sexy Fantasy Bra received a Guinness World Record for being the most expensive bra ever made ($11 million), and in 1990 a Guinness World Record was awarded for the Mouawad Splendor―the most expensive single pear-shaped diamond in the world at the time ($12.76 million).
