In January, American actor of Egyptian origin, Rami Malek, won the 2019 Golden Globe for best actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, repeating the glory of Egyptian superstar, Omar El-Sharif, who won the same prize for his role in Doctor Zhivago in 1966.

Malek’s outstanding performance has earned him praise worldwide and seen him nominated for the Best Actor award at the 2019 Oscars, which he is hotly tipped to win this month.
Bohemian Rhapsody has become the highest grossing biopic of all-time, with total gross exceeding $798 million. The movie also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture—Drama.

Malek’s lead role as Elliot Alderson in the TV series, Mr. Robot (2015-2016), was a turning point in his career. His performance won him an Emmy, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and a Critics’ Choice award. It also saw him nominated for a Golden Globe twice, a Dorian Award, and a Satellite Award.

The 38-year-old actor was born in Los Angeles to Egyptian immigrant parents from Upper Egypt. He graduated in 2003 from the University of Evansville with a degree in theater. The Hollywood star began his acting career in 2004, with a guest-starring role on the TV series Gilmore Girls.

As he grew in experience Malek won supporting roles in movies such as the trilogy Night at the Museum (2006), Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009), and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014). He also appeared in films Ain’t Them Bodies Saints (2013), and Short Term 12 (2013), as well as TV series such as The War at Home (2005-2007), 24 (2010), and The Pacific (2010).

The actor featured in sixth position in Forbes Middle East’s list of Stars with Arab Roots in 2018.
